Legal Assistant Certificate Program

An innovative, practical, real-world education

Program Description 

The Legal Assistant Certificate Program is specifically designed and taught by practicing judges, lawyers, and legal assistants. This fully online certificate program delivers cutting-edge knowledge with practical experience so graduates are prepared to enter the legal profession upon graduation. ​This program merges the interactive, user-driven aspects of the internet with a comprehensive curriculum. This program prepares students to be knowledgeable, ethical, and effective while working with lawyers in public and private law practice, in the judiciary, corporations, and government.  

 

The Legal Assistant Certificate Program is a 10-week long intensive course taught through a combination of live-streamed lectures, reading and writing assignments, one-on-one instructor feedback, quizzes, and on the job training. 

Classes will meet every Tuesday and Thursday evening from 6:00pm (EST) to 8:30pm (EST). Students can view lectures live, ask questions, and interact during this scheduled class time. Students unable to attend the live lecture or students who would like to review the live lecture will have access to the lectures online. All live-streamed lectures will be recorded and uploaded for students to view on-demand a few hours after the live-lecture concludes. 

Course Objectives

Students will demonstrate the following skills through successful completion of all required coursework and assignments:

  • Work effectively and professionally in a legal environment;

  • Demonstrate confidentiality and knowledge of ethics in the legal environment; 

  • Prepare correspondence, discovery, pleadings and other legal documents; 

  • Demonstrate effective written and oral communication skills to work effectively with clients, attorneys, and other support staff.

Prerequisites

High School Diploma or GED

Proficient in the English Language

What is a legal assistant?

A legal assistant, also known as a paralegal, is a person qualified by education, training or work experience who is employed or retained by a lawyer, law office, corporation, government agency or other entity and performs specifically delegated substantive legal work for which a lawyer is responsible.

Is there a difference between a legal assistant and a paralegal?

No. The terms "legal assistant" and "paralegal" are used interchangeably, much like the terms "attorney" and "lawyer."

Do you have a job placement service?

While no school can guarantee that every student who completes it's program will find a job, our program does include important tools to help you obtain a job in the legal field. All students will receive one-on-one assistance by a licensed attorney in drafting a resume and writing a cover letter, and will participate in a mock interview. Students will also receive a letter of recommendation outlining the training experience received through our program.

The total cost of the Legal Assistant Certificate Program is $3,495.

What is the job market like?

Employment of legal assistants is projected to grow 15 percent between 2016 and 2026, faster than the average for all other occupations. Employers are trying to reduce costs and increase the availability and efficiency of legal services by hiring legal assistants to perform tasks once done by lawyers.

How do I complete the certificate? 

You must successfully complete the 10-week long intensive course taught through a combination of live-streamed lectures, reading and writing assignments, one-on-one instructor feedback, and quizzes. After completing the 10-week long course, students are required to complete a minimum of 40 on the job training hours. When all course work and on the job training hours have been complete, students will be sent a Legal Assistant Certificate from Legal Assistants of America. 

Do I need a license to work as a legal assistant/paralegal?

No. Legal assistants, also referred to as paralegals, always work under the supervision of an attorney. Although there are voluntary national exams sponsored by professional associations, there is no required license for legal assistants/paralegals. Individuals wishing to work in the legal field typically need one of the following: a legal assistant certificate, a college degree, or experience in the legal field.
